How to Rent a Car Hauler in San Antonio (Everything You Need to Know)
Whether you just bought a car out of state, need to move a project vehicle, or your daily driver broke down and needs to get to a shop across town — renting a car hauler is one of the most practical things you can do. And in San Antonio, it's easier than you might think.
Here's everything you need to know before you show up.
What Is a Car Hauler, Exactly?
A car hauler is a flat-deck trailer specifically designed to load, secure, and transport vehicles. Unlike a regular utility trailer, car haulers typically have longer decks, built-in tie-down points, and often a winch to pull vehicles that can't drive on under their own power.
At Sunny Side Up Rentals, we have four car hauler options depending on your vehicle and towing setup:
7x20 Car Hauler — great for standard cars and small trucks
8.5x22 Deckover Tilt — tilting deck makes loading easy, handles larger vehicles
83x20 B5 Car Hauler — heavy duty, ideal for performance vehicles
83x20 B6 Car Hauler — our most capable car hauler for larger loads
All of our car haulers are winch-equipped, so if your vehicle doesn't run, we've still got you covered.
What Vehicle Do You Need to Tow a Car Hauler?
This is the question we get most often — and it's the right one to ask before you book.
The general rule: you need a tow vehicle that can handle the combined weight of the trailer plus the vehicle you're hauling. Here's a quick breakdown:
Half ton trucks (F-150, Silverado 1500, Ram 1500) — good for lighter car haulers with standard passenger cars
3/4 ton trucks (F-250, Silverado 2500, Ram 2500) — better for heavier vehicles or the larger deckover
1 ton trucks — ideal for our heaviest car hauler setups
Not sure if your truck can handle it? Call us at 830-219-4396 and tell us your truck year, make, and model — we'll tell you exactly which trailer works for your tow capacity.
How Much Does It Cost to Rent a Car Hauler in San Antonio?
Our car hauler pricing starts at $89/day for the 7x20 and goes up from there depending on the size and features. Multi-day rentals get you 10% off at 3 days and 20% off at 7 days.
Compared to hiring a towing company or transport service — which can run $300-$800 or more for a local move — renting a car hauler yourself is a significant savings, especially if you already have a capable tow vehicle.
What Do You Need to Bring?
Renting is straightforward. Here's what to have ready:
A valid driver's license
Your tow vehicle — we'll help confirm it's rated for the trailer
The right hitch ball size (we'll tell you in advance — usually 2" or 2 5/16")
Tie-down straps — we provide straps on request
We also recommend confirming with your auto insurance that you're covered while towing. Most policies extend coverage to anything you're towing, but it's worth a quick call to verify.
Loading Your Vehicle — Tips From Experience
If you've never loaded a car onto a trailer before, here are a few things that make it easier:
Drive on slowly and centered — don't rush it
For tilt trailers, make sure the deck is fully tilted before driving on
Use the winch for non-running vehicles — don't try to push them on
Secure all four wheels with tie-down straps before moving an inch
Check your straps at the first stop, then every hour or so on longer trips
We're happy to walk you through the loading process when you pick up — just ask.
