What Size Trailer Do I Need? A Simple Guide for San Antonio Renters
So you've got stuff to move and you're thinking about renting a trailer — great call. But now comes the question everyone asks: what size do I actually need?
Rent too small and you're making two trips. Rent too big and you're dragging around empty space (and paying for it). This guide breaks it down so you can make the right call without any guesswork.
Start With What You're Hauling
Before you look at trailer sizes, think about your load. Ask yourself three things:
How much does it weigh? (Or roughly how much?)
How big is it — length, width, height?
Does it need to be protected from weather or road debris?
Those three answers will point you straight to the right trailer. Let's walk through each size we offer at Sunny Side Up Rentals and what they're best for.
5x8 Utility Trailer — Starting at $49/day
This is our smallest trailer and it's perfect for light, compact loads. Think motorcycles, a small ATV, a few pieces of furniture, or a run to the dump with yard waste.
Capacity: 1,200 lbs
Hitch: 1 7/8" ball (most standard hitches work)
Best for: motorcycles, small loads, short moves
If you're moving a single room or hauling something lightweight that fits in a short bed, this is your trailer. It's also the easiest to tow — almost any vehicle with a hitch can handle it.
6x12 Utility Trailer — Starting at $59/day
A step up in both length and capacity. This one handles side-by-sides, two motorcycles, a load of mulch or gravel, or the contents of a small apartment pretty comfortably.
Capacity: 1,800 lbs
Hitch: 2" ball
Best for: side-by-sides, multi-room moves, landscaping materials
This is probably our most popular size for homeowners doing weekend projects or moving between smaller spaces.
7x16 Utility Trailer — Starting at $65/day
Here's where things get serious. The 7x16 is built for heavy loads — think equipment, full household moves, or commercial hauling jobs.
Capacity: 10,000 lbs
Hitch: 2 5/16" ball
Best for: heavy equipment, large furniture loads, contractor use
You'll need a 3/4 ton or larger truck to tow this one safely. But if you've got the tow vehicle, this trailer can handle almost anything you throw at it.
7x20 Utility Trailer — Starting at $69/day
The 7x20 gives you extra length without the extreme weight capacity of the 7x16. Great for long items — lumber, pipe, ladder racks — or when you need the floor space more than the lifting capacity.
Capacity: 5,500 lbs
Hitch: 2" ball
Best for: long materials, full apartment moves, landscaping
This is a favorite for contractors hauling lumber or equipment that's long but not necessarily super heavy.
When to Go Enclosed
If your load needs protection from weather, road debris, or theft, you want our 105x20 Enclosed Trailer with winch ($129/day). It's fully enclosed with a rear ramp, a built-in winch, and 5,500 lbs of capacity. Perfect for vehicles, furniture moves, or any load you don't want exposed to the elements.
Quick Size Guide
Light loads under 1,500 lbs → 5x8 ($49/day)
Medium loads, side-by-sides → 6x12 ($59/day)
Heavy equipment, big moves → 7x16 ($65/day)
Long materials, full moves → 7x20 ($69/day)
Weather protection needed → Enclosed 105x20 ($129/day)
